The Intrapreneur

We have all heard the term "Entrepreneur," but what about the term "Intrapreneur," and why is it important?

What Is an Intrapreneur?

An intrapreneur is an employee who works on an innovative idea or project within a company. They have the freedom and autonomy to develop the project as an entrepreneur would, but they also have the support and resources of the established organization. Intrapreneurship can be beneficial to a company because it can foster creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. It can also help the company adapt to changing market conditions, customer needs, and technological advances. A company can promote intrapreneurship among employees by creating a culture that encourages risk-taking, experimentation, and learning from failure. The company can also provide incentives, recognition, and rewards for intrapreneurs who generate value for the organization.

Ways to Become an Intrapreneur

  • Identify a problem or opportunity that aligns with your organization's goals and vision. You can do this by conducting research, talking to customers, or brainstorming with your colleagues.

  • Develop a solution or proposal that addresses the problem or opportunity. You can use tools like design thinking, lean startup, or business model canvas to test and validate your ideas.

  • Pitch your solution or proposal to your manager or other stakeholders. You need to communicate the benefits, risks, and costs of your idea, and how it fits with the organization's strategy and culture.

  • Execute your solution or proposal with passion and persistence. You need to gather resources, build a team, and manage the project effectively. You also need to measure and report on the outcomes and impact of your solution or proposal.

  • Learn from your successes and failures and seek feedback and improvement. You need to be open to criticism, adapt to changing circumstances, and celebrate your achievements. You also need to share your learnings and best practices with others in your organization.

How Intrapreneurs Foster Innovation

Intrapreneurs foster innovation by identifying and pursuing new opportunities, creating and developing new products or services, and solving problems in novel ways. Intrapreneurs have the freedom, autonomy, and resources to experiment and test their ideas, as well as the support and guidance from their managers and leaders. Intrapreneurs benefit the organization by generating value, enhancing competitiveness, and fostering a culture of creativity and learning.

Consider how you can foster innovation and what potential avenues for intrapreneurship you have within your own organization. If you are a business owner, consider how you can foster intrapreneurship among your employees to help improve your company and develop sustainable competitive advantages.
